3/24 - Natural Dye Workshop: Creating Color with Compost
Date: Tuesday, March 24th
Time: 6-8:30pm
Location: The Dime Store (118 E McKinney St, Denton, TX)
Join us as we explore the basics of preparing fabrics for natural dyeing with Shelley Christener, our dear founder and friend. In this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to transform everyday compost scraps into beautiful, richly colored natural dyes. Shelley will guide you through essential dye preparation techniques, as well as introduce you to shibori tie-dye methods for creating pattern and texture on fabric.
You’ll practice these techniques on a cotton bandana, resulting in a one-of-a-kind naturally dyed scarf to take home. Along the way, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of natural dye processes, sustainable making practices, and how to continue experimenting at home with accessible materials.
Students will leave with:
A naturally dyed shibori bandana
Fundamental knowledge of natural dye extraction
An introduction to fabric prep, mordants, and sustainable dye practices
Inspiration to keep exploring natural color
Perfect for beginners and curious makers alike!
